- Shel begins to play guitar at age 12 in 1942.
- Korean War begins in 1950.
- In 1956, after serving in the military, he was hired as a cartoonist for Playboy.
- 1959 - Alaska and Hawaii become states
- JFK is assassination in 1963.
- In 1963, he started writing poems for children, after someone suggesting it to him.
- The next year (1964) he published a book named “The Giving Tree”.
- MLK assassinated- 1968
- In 1969, Shel wrote a famous song by Johnny Cash, “A Boy Named Sue”
